Mangrove conservation for climate change mitigation in Indonesia

Abstract: In terms of climate change mitigation, mangroves serve as carbon sinks and the loss of mangrove forests can result in significant release of stored carbon. As the country in the world with the largest cover of mangrove forest, Indonesia has global significance in climate change mitigation. About 22% of mangrove forests in Indonesia are preserved in conservation areas and provide 0.82–1.09 PgC hectare−1 of carbon storage. Greater potential for climate change mitigation can be achieved by increasing mangrove con… Show more

“…Major conservation efforts to reverse these two challenges include the establishment of protected areas and the restoration of degraded ecosystems [5,6]. Protected areas are considered to be an effective tool for harmonizing the troubled relationship between humanity and the rest of nature [7][8][9], especially in biodiversity hotspots such as mangrove forests and coral reefs [10,11]. Protected areas also play a critical role in the mitigation of global climate change [12].…”

“…Mangrove forests are one of the world's most endangered and critical ecosystems, and they are very important as they provide coastal protection from storm surges, maintain our climate, control floods, and stabilize coastline [209][210][211][212][213]. Although UAVs have become a convenient tool for conducting area assessments and biomass mapping of mangroves [214][215][216] in countries such as Costa Rica, Australia, and Malaysia, their potential to help with mangrove reforestation is yet to be explored.…”

“…In the medium to long term, new actions are also needed to forge a common lowland sustainability vision, enhance data sharing and use in lowland management, mainstream peatland protection and management in key regulations outside the forestry and environmental sector, and enhance the monitoring of private sector practices. Improved governance of other lowland ecosystems such as mangroves also needs to be addressed (Sidik et al, 2018).…”
