Manipulating Migration Behavior of Magnetic Graphene Oxide via Magnetic Field Induced Casting and Phase Separation toward High-Performance Hybrid Ultrafiltration Membranes

Abstract: Hybrid membranes blended with nanomaterials such as graphene oxide (GO) have great opportunities in water applications due to their multiple functionalities, but they suffer from low modification efficiency of nanomaterials due to the fact that plenty of the nanomaterials are embedded within the polymer matrix during the blending process. Herein, a novel Fe3O4/GO-poly(vinylidene fluoride) (Fe3O4/GO-PVDF) hybrid ultrafiltration membrane was developed via the combination of magnetic field induced casting and a p… Show more

“…A GO/Co 3 O 4 ‐incorporated UF membrane exhibited excellent resistance against Escherichia coli (E. coli) , and the flux recovery ratio (FRR) after activated sludge fouling was also largely improved . In contrast, the presence of GO/Fe 3 O 4 in a membrane imparted a superior fouling resistance to bovine serum albumin (BSA) . The metal oxide nanoparticles were revealed to covalently bond to the GO surface, forming monodentate or bidentate complexes .…”

“…The resultant TFC FO membrane showed a much higher permeability than conventionally casted membranes. Xu et al prepared a Fe 3 O 4 /GO/PVDF UF membrane via a magnetic field–induced casting technique. A magnetic field was applied horizontally to the casting solution.…”

“…Finally, the composite membranes were washed with distilled water for 30 min to remove pollutant before measuring the water flux (J w2 ). To further investigate the fouling process, the flux recovery ratio (FRR), the total fouling ratio (R t ), reversible fouling ratio (R r ) and irreversible fouling ratio (R ir ) were determined as follows [31]:…”

“…XPS and EDS had different capabilities, limitations, and depths of analysis, and these techniques might provide differing results from each other (Gorzalski et al 2017;Xu et al 2016). In order to understand the migration behavior of FGO, we attempted to use XPS, EDS, and indirect computation to detect oxygen contents in different depths of membranes and then analyzed FGO contents in the top layer, sublayer, and the whole membrane, respectively.…”
