Mapping and characterizing the Jefoure roads that have cultural heritage values in the Gurage socio-ecological production landscape of Ethiopia

Abstract: The Gurage people in Ethiopia designs a unique grass-cover road called Jefoure.• Jefoure roads have long lengths and wide breadth, but they are not consistent.• The physical geography of the landscape has an impact on the Jefoure roads.• Jefoure roads are a multifunctional road.• The Jefoure roads and their evolving landscape require international recognition.

“…Though criteria have been developed to evaluate various landscape systems, such as SESPLs and GIAHSs found in different parts of the world [76,77], there is a need to develop more comprehensive elaborations of ensembles and anatomies of them in order to make recommendations to prepare detailed dynamic conservation and productivity improvement plans. Due to the high diversity and complexity of these landscapes, it would be difficult to understand the whole process by examining a single resource system using a specific dimension of landscape characteristics [99]. Based on the findings and discussions, the present study provides a framework that could be used as a general guideline and to develop indicators applicable to other landscape systems in the tropical earth zones of the world.…”

“…According to Moran and Kanemoto ( 2017 ), Ethiopia is one of the hotspots for species threats from global supply chains, particularly related to the consumption footprint of the European Union. One example of the interaction between humans and nature is the Gurage socio-ecological production landscape in Ethiopia, where people reside in village settlements according to ecological conditions (Sahle and Saito 2021a ). Natural and plantation forests, sacred forests, home garden agroforests, cereal crops, grasslands, woodlots, wetlands, surface water, Jefoure roads, and human settlements make up the Gurage socio-ecological production system, characterized as a mosaic landscape (Sahle et al 2021a , b ).…”
