Mapping Post-Harvest Waste in Perishable Supply Chains through System Dynamics: A Sri Lankan Case Study

Abstract: Purpose : This research focuses on gaining insights on post-harvest waste. It is based on the upstream traditional vegetable and fruit supply chains in Sri Lanka and hopes to provide a basic understanding for future research. The research focuses on Thambuththegama and Nuwara Eliya dedicated economic centers which were established to collect vegetables directly from farmers.Research Method : Novel methods such as value stream mapping and system dynamics were used to map the supply chain and post-harvest waste … Show more

“…Various modeling methods can be used to manage the growing complexity and unpredictability of the agri-food supply chain. In the selected papers, modeling techniques such as agent-based modeling [71,72], system [63,[73][74][75] discrete event simulation [30,56,66,[76][77][78][79][80], and hybrid simulation [30,81,82] are commonly used. The application of these methods will provide answers to planning-related questions, such as the amount to be purchased, delivered, or produced.…”

“…The former allows comprehending the interconnectedness of the entities within the system while the latter augments this through the causal links between variables with polarities for each that indicate the behaviour upon alteration of either of them. SD approach has been employed by the researchers for different aspects of the food SC like investigating the effect of lead time and demand fluctuations on the performance (Kumar and Nigmatullin, 2011), comparing the three operational modes of Agricultural SC in China (Liu et al, 2016), comparing the profit gained by players upon coordination across multiple levels of the network (Tama et al, 2018), explaining the dynamics based on the relationships defined between the variables (Jayalath and Perera, 2021), etc.…”

“…Evidently, Lakdinu et al (2022) investigate how information technology can arrange the supply chain networks to improve the product offering. In addition to these discussions, recent studies also reveal how the downward trends of household economic conditions led to immediate social exclusion in purchasing essential goods and services despite considerable market accessibility and supply chain networks prevailing under limitations to social mobility ( Dissanayake et al, 2022 ; Jayalath and Perera, 2021 ). In addition, some districts such as Gampaha, Colombo, Puttalam, Kalutara, Jaffna, and Kandy were regarded as “high risk” areas that caused most economic activities to come to an indefinite standstill curfew in these areas.…”
