Mapping the Landscape of Creativity Support Tools in HCI

Abstract: Creativity Support Tools (CSTs) play a fundamental role in the study of creativity in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Even so, there is no consensus definition of the term 'CST' in HCI, and in most studies, CSTs have been construed as oneoff exploratory prototypes, typically built by the researchers themselves. This makes it difficult to clearly demarcate CST research, but also to compare findings across studies, which impedes advancement in digital creativity as a growing field of research. Based on a liter… Show more

“…Crowds consist of individuals, and an individual's creativity can be enhanced through creativity support tools [56,57]. A key research area concerning these tools is the ideation phase [25,66]. Prior work suggests that computational priming in the ideation phase (e.g.…”

“…Shneiderman identified eight creative activities that could benefit from being supported by creativity support systems: searching, visualising, consulting peers, thinking, exploring, composing, reviewing, and disseminating [23]. The majority of creativity support systems, however, focus only on the ideation phase [8,29].…”
