However, despite being regarded as one of the most severe and complex symptoms of psychotic disorders, a number of disagreements surround the description of its most fundamental phenomenology. This work has reviewed classic and current research on thought insertion in order to examine and clarify its main experiential features as reported by patients from a first-person … Show more

“…When she says she was thinking about what it would be like to be a caveman, we can unproblematically conclude that she was imagining that something was the case; she is reporting a cognitive experience . However, the answer to this question becomes puzzling when a person claims to be dead (Cotard delusion; Berrios & Luque, 1995), that her bodily movements are under external control (Delusions of alien control; Frith, 1992), or that external agents are inserting thoughts into her mind (López‐Silva, 2018; Mullins & Spence, 2003), among others. Although all these cases will be regarded as delusional , the question about the type of mental state grounding these reports is subject of discussion.…”

“…Rather, identifying which experiential structure has altered and how it has altered can require a complex and sometimes contentious interpretive process. For example, a number of philosophers have argued that thought insertion involves an experience in which one has neither agency for nor ownership of the thought in question, and, therefore, the basic sense of for-me-ness is entirely absent from the experience (see, e.g., Lane 2012Lane , 2015López-Silva 2018Metzinger 2004). Mads Gram Henriksen, Parnas, and Zahavi, by contrast, argue against this interpretation.…”
