Mapping the three-dimensional dust extinction towards the supernova remnant S147 – the S147 dust cloud

Abstract: We present a three dimensional (3D) extinction analysis in the region toward the supernova remnant (SNR) S147 (G180.0-1.7) using multi-band photometric data from the Xuyi Schmidt Telescope Photometric Survey of the Galactic Anticentre (XSTPS-GAC), 2MASS and WISE. We isolate a previously unrecognised dust structure likely to be associated with SNR S147. The structure, which we term as "S147 dust cloud", is estimated to have a distance d " 1.22˘0.21 kpc, consistent with the conjecture that S147 is associated wit… Show more

“…We adopt E 0 n " f 1 E n pd min q, where n is the index of stars, f 1 is the scale factor, E 0 n is the foreground colour excess, and E n pd min q is the colour excess at distance d min from the Chen et al map. Similar as in Chen et al (2017) and Yu et al (2019), along the line of sight we assume a simple Gaussian distribution of dust in the cloud. The colour excess profile for the cloud E 1 pdq is then given by,…”

“…To map the 3D dust distribution in the Galactic plane, a procedure similar to that of Green et al (2014) and Chen et al (2017a) is adopted. We divide the sample stars into subfields (pixels) of size 6ˆ6 arcmin.…”
