MAR site suitability mapping for arid–semiarid regions by remote data and combined approach: A case study from Balochistan, Pakistan

Abstract: Climate change, along with the rapid increase in population and mismanagement of water resources, resulted in a decline in the quality and quantity of groundwater worldwide. Balochistan, the largest and driest province of Pakistan, is located in the south western part of the country. This region is suffering from the declining water table, land subsidence, and intense soil erosion. Rapidly increasing population, sea level rise, increasing temperature, declining average annual precipitation, and short-duration … Show more

“…The authors verified this methodology on data from three piezometers located in the Lucca plain (Italy). Lentini et al (2022) propose a preliminary and large-scale survey methodology to identify areas suitable for further investigation for the application of Sustainable Drainage Systems and Managed Aquifer Recharge techniques (see also Hayat et al, 2021). These techniques aim to increase infiltration, and their success strongly depends on the hydrogeological and morphological characteristics of an area.…”

“…Several comprehensive methodological approaches for assessing MAR viability were developed (e.g., Daher et al 2011;DEEPWATER-CE 2020;Hayat et al 2021;Lobo Ferreira and Leitão 2014;NRMMC-EPHC-NHMRC 2009;Rolf 2017;San-Sebastián-Sauto et al 2018). The site characterization (e.g., climatological, morphological, geological, hydrogeological, and geochemical reconstructions) commonly represents the first phase of MAR solution planning.…”

“…Internationally, various studies propose different GIS criteria and various methods to delineate suitable sites for MAR and SuDS application (Hussaini et al 2022;Hayat et al 2021;Fathi et al 2020;Kazakis 2018;Aghazadeh et al 2019;Dearden et al 2013;Warwick et al 2013). The MAR and SuDS siting approach for the city of Rome (Italy), proposed in this work, is similar to that defined by Warwick et al (2013) where hydrogeological properties and water table depth play the predominant factors in the analysis.…”
