Marine macroalgae and associated flowering plants from the Keret Archipelago, White Sea, Russia

Abstract: The marine algal flora of the Keret Archipelago (66° N, 33° E) in the White Sea, Russia was investigated during 2008. Over 250 algal records from more than 15 islands and several sites on the adjoining mainland produced a total of 62 algal species. This raised the total from 56 to 88 species of Chlorophyta (23 species), Phaeophyceae (31 species), Rhodophyta (33 species), and Tribophyceae (1 species) of which seven were new records or verifications of ambiguous records for the White Sea and 11 species are new f… Show more

“…P. crispa has been identified in the nesting material and as gull-transported materials in Antarctica (Parnikoza et al, 2012). Wind may also be a dispersal agent of the microscopic spores and juvenile fronds as suggested for the supratidal Prasiola species by Garbary & Tarakhovskaya (2013) on the shores of the White Sea.…”

“…There are other terrestrial species of Prasiola such as. P. calophylla (Carmichael ex Greville) Kützing, and P. furfuracea (Mertens ex Hornemann) Kützing, that occur in terrestrial coastal habitats around the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans (e.g., Rindi 2007, Garbary andTarakhovskaya 2013),…”

“…Indeed, in contrast to F. vesiculosus, which is characteristic for low-intertidal zone, P. canaliculata is a high-intertidal organism which is regularly exposed to very harsh conditions, i.e. subjected to prolonged desiccation, light and temperature stress [29,51]. This definitely requires higher plasticity in metabolic adaptation, and functional differentiation of two subcellular fractions of phlorotannins may contribute to survival of the organism.…”

“…Fifteen species of intertidal and subtidal red algae, representing five orders of the class Florideophyceae ( Table 4 ), were collected in the Keret Archipelago (Kandalaksha Bay, White Sea) in June–August 2017–2020. The list of objects includes a majority of red algae inhabiting the region and having considerable biomass [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ]. Thalli were collected from the typical habitats of each species ( Table 4 ).…”

“…The dominating representatives of Rhodophyta in the White Sea coastal waters are Palmaria palmata , Odonthalia dentata , Phycodrys rubens , Coccotylus brodiei , C. truncatus , Ahnfeltia plicata , Vertebrata fucoides , Polysiphonia stricta , Lithothamnion glaciale , Ptilota gunneri , P. serrata , etc. [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ]. Several of these or systematically close species were reported to have multiple biological activities.…”
