Maritime Networking: Bringing Internet to the Sea

Abstract: Maritime networks establish wireless multi-hop networks to provide wireless broadband service at sea, connecting various kinds of ships, maritime buoys, and beacons. The maritime networks possess two distinguishing characteristics highly affected by maneuver at sea-dynamic link quality and bandwidth constrained, and dynamic network topology-that warrant specific attention. Unlike land vehicles, maneuver at sea is affected by sea surface movement and wave occlusions, which can cause unstable environment with a … Show more

“…Smart ships use ICT, such as big data, sensing and detection devices, and IoT, to reduce environmental impact and enhance ship safety, operations, and maintenance in various aspects, such as energy efficiency management, communication network, and navigation. Examples of smart ships include Great Smart that provides intelligent ship operations, maintenance, and navigation [91], and Telenor Maritime's Smart Ship that provides smart communication network for digital lifestyle onboard a cruise [92], [93]. Examples of smart ship projects are the Ishin Next -MOL Smart Ship Project that aims to enable safe autonomous sailing and to reduce environmental impact [94], and the Hyundai Heavy Industries and Accenture project that aims to enable datadriven decision making for efficient operations [95].…”

“…Clear limitations of the currently employed maritime communication solutions and the availability of many broadband technologies successfully deployed on-shore have created much interest in their possible adaptation for the off-shore use [19], [20]. Several research initiatives such as [21]- [23] have been undertaken to find a way to utilize various Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN) technologies in maritime conditions.…”

“…Attention in this area is needed in maritime network despite the fact that broadband access is very common on land. The difficulty in managing maritime network is the inability to maneuver at sea, constrained bandwidth and the dynamic network topology that warrant specific attention [1]. Unlike the land vehicles, maneuvering at sea is affected by sea surface movement and wave obstructions [2].…”
