Maspin expression in carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma

Abstract: Aims: To investigate the presence and distribution of the protein maspin in carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA). Methods: Maspin expression was studied by means of immunohistochemistry in 16 cases of CXPA, using the labelled polymer method. Results: According to the extent of invasion, the tumours were subdivided into: intracapsular (five cases), minimally invasive (four cases), and invasive (seven cases). Twelve patients had carcinoma with only epithelial differentiation, whereas four had a malignant myoe… Show more

“…It is important to emphasize the role of myoepithelial cell as a tumor suppressor providing an important defense against cancer invasion [3]. This function was based on the capacity of myoepithelial cells to accumulate abundant extracellular matrix and secrete relatively low levels of matrix degradation proteinases but relatively high levels of maspin and various other anti-invasion proteinase inhibitors [36][37][38].…”

“…However, maspin apoptotic effect appears to be tumorspecific (19). The loss of maspin has been reported with poor prognosis in breast cancers, oral squamous cell carcinoma, lung, and prostate carcinoma (7,13).…”

“…Although the ratio of malignant transformation is unclear in the salivary gland tumors we have examined in the last 10 years, we identi ed 155 pleomorphic adenomas and 15 carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenomas. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenomas are generally divided into three histopathological types : noninvasive, minimally invasive less than 1.5 mm of invasion beyond the lesional capsule , and invasive type 6 . In our 15 cases of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma, three cases of noninvasive type, no case of minimally invasive type, and 12 cases Thirty cases of noninvasive intracapsular carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma have been reported previously but the features of four of those cases were not reported in detail 2-5 7 8 .…”
