Mass spectrometric separation and quantitation of overlapping isotopologues. H2O/HOD/D2O and H2Se/HDSe/D2Se mixtures

Abstract: Three conceptually different mathematical methods are presented for accurate mass spectrometric determination of H 2 O/HOD/D 2 O and H 2 Se/HDSe/D 2 Se concentrations from mixtures. These are alternating least-squares, weighted two-band target entropy minimization, and a statistical mass balance model. The otherwise nonmeasurable mass spectra of partially deuterated isotopologues (HOD and HDSe) are mathematically constructed. Any recorded isotopologue mixture mass spectra are then deconvoluted by least-squares… Show more

“…In this case, relative abundances of the arsane and monomethylarsane isotopologues were estimated using mathematical deconvolution techniques previously developed for quantitation of hydrides EH 2 (E = O, Se) [15], EH 3 (E = As, Sb, Bi) and EH 4 (E = Ge, Sn) [16] Electron impact mass spectra of the pure arsane isotopologues are given below: …”

“…Statistical Model for the Mass Spectra of As 2 H n D 4-n and As 3 H n D 5-n Statistical reconstruction of partially deuterated hydride has been reported previously for deuterated homologues of diborane [17], methane [18], ethane [19], water, selane [15], arsane, stibane, bismuthane, stannane, and germane [16]. Here, a model proposed by Meija et al [16] was used for this purpose.…”

“…Moreover, it is not feasible to synthesize pure partially deuterated isotopologues or separate them by conventional gas chromatography. Nevertheless, the determination of the mole fraction of each isotopologue in a mixture can be achieved mathematically by applying a statistical mass balance model [15,16]. Using this method, it was possible to delineate the mechanism of formation of diarsane and triarsane in the As(III)/[BH 4 ] − system and to discover a strong perturbation to the mechanism of arsane generation due to the presence of Rh(III).…”
