Massive Lepton-Pair Production in Hadron-Hadron Collisions at High Energies

Abstract: On the basis of a parton model studied earlier we consider the production process of large mass lepton pairs from hadron-hadron inelastic collisions in the limiting region, s --coo, Q 2 /s finite, Q2and s being the squared invariant masses of the lepton pair and the two initial hadrons, respectively. General scaling properties and connections with deep inelastic electron scattering are discussed. In particular, a rapidly decreasing cross section as Q2/s -1 is predicted as a consequence of the observed rapid fal… Show more

“…Although our goal, namely the calculation of the NLO QCD corrections, would be quite independent of the value of the contact interaction scale Λ, for definiteness we choose Λ = 6 (20) TeV for the Tevatron (LHC). Furthermore, in presenting our results, we shall consider only one of the couplings η q AB and ξ q AB to be non-zero and of unit strength.…”

“…Some of the best constraints on compositeness, for example, came from the OPAL [18] and CDF [19] experiments. More recently the measurement of the Drell-Yan cross section [20] at high invariant masses set the most stringent limits on contact interactions of the type given in eqn. (1.1).…”

“…At hadron colliders, the Drell-Yan (DY) process [1], proceeding at tree level via the s-channel exchange of a virtual photon or Z boson, can produce charged lepton pairs over a wide range of invariant mass. The differential cross-section as a function of the invariant mass is described by perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO).…”

“…[17] QCD resummation [18] can be used to define parameters to describe p T (W ) in the low p T (W ) region relevant to measuring the W mass. These parameters are determined or checked by measuring p T (Z).…”
