Maternal Exposure to Exogenous Nitrogen Compounds and Complications of Pregnancy

Abstract: Increased lipid peroxidation and reduced antioxidant activity have been reported with pregnancy complications. Given that exogenous oxidants stimulate formation of lipid peroxides, the authors investigated the relationship between exposure to nitrogen-oxidizing species and pregnancy complications and took into account markers of antioxidant and oxidant status. The study sample included pregnant women who were from an area polluted by oxidized nitrogen compounds. Methemoglobin, a biomarker of individual exposur… Show more

“…Although differences appear to exist in this small number of individuals (n = 30), the possibility that a case of subclinical MHG went undetected or that feeding history was incorrectly reported by the primary caregiver cannot be ruled out. Thus, a number of factors may be needed to explain the presence or absence of particular outcomes along the fringes of an exposure category (60). Without further research it would be difficult to assign these multiple factors primary or secondary status, although it should be noted that diarrheal conditions have been implicated in a number of MHG cases in the case-history literature (61,62).…”

“…On other hand, only a limited number of studies in human populations suggest an association between phthalate exposure and adverse reproductive health outcomes [35]. A correlation was found between urinary phthalate levels and pregnancy complications such as anemia, toxemia, and preeclampsia in women living near a plastics manufacturer [36,37]. The results of the studies on exposure to phthalates and reproductive outcome in humans are presented in Table 1 and their impact on genital development in Table 2.…”

“…Children breathing the polluted air of Teplice, Northern Bohemia, showed a high prevalence of adverse respiratory symptoms and decreased lung function (30). In a sample of pregnant women conducted in a city of central Bulgaria experiencing nitrate pollution, 64% of the women had levels of methemoglobin above the physiological normal value of 2% and 84% of the pregnancies were marked by some pathology (32).…”
