Maternity care options influence readmission of newborns

Abstract: Post-delivery care options and routines influence neonatal morbidity as measured by hospital readmission rate. A final infant examination at 49-72 h and an active follow-up programme may reduce the risk of readmission.

“…Although neither of these outcomes are perfect measures to validate the indicator they have been widely used as proxies for longer term neonatal morbidity (26)(27)(28)(29). Hospital readmission has been identified as a significant outcome indicator as sicker or more complicated patients have higher rates of readmission (30), however this may be an unreliable variable as we found a high proportion (16.2%) of infants without a severe morbidity in the neonatal period were also readmitted to hospital in the first year of life.…”

“…Integrative power means to support the woman's ability to surrender herself to the power of physiological birth ( 58 ) and thereby have a feeling of control yet surrendering to the process ( 56 ). A trusting relationship with her partner during birth is important for a woman ( 59 , 60 ) and contributes to each woman feeling safe ( 34 ), plus her relationship with her partner may be strengthened ( 61 ). Feeling safe during birth has positive effects on mothers' breastfeeding ( 62 ).…”

“…Third, the E-NAOI demonstrated good predictive ability, as indicated by a two-fold increased risk of overnight hospital admission and a 15-fold increased risk of death within the first year among infants flagged by the E-NAOI at birth. Although neither hospital readmission nor infant death are perfect measures to validate the indicator, they have been widely used as proxies for longer term neonatal morbidity 16 17…”
