Mathematical-logic formulation in metal cutting theory

Abstract

The u.nalysia and conception of metal cutting given in the paper not only makes it possible to formulate the contents and qualify methods of acquiring knowledge in metal cutting with a higher degree of accuracy, but indicates at the same time a sort of entrance into cybernetics, of which the important aspects are:(a) mathematical description and modelling of tho manufacturing process of metal cutting; (b) optimilization of tho control of manufacturing processes of metal cutting; (c) solving tho problems of optimal designs of manufacturing processes and machines; (d) mechanization and automation of information system.In view of the little attention paid in the branch of machining to the mathematical description of actions and operations, which has retarded the ndvnncc in the development of the theory and practice of machining, then cybernetical works on machining are likely to make great strides and find an extensive range of practical applications. IntroductionThe need for formulating the cognitive disciplines on metal cutting has been considered in Czechoslovakia for some time now. Obviously, among the works dealing with thcse problems can be included the possibility of applying mathematical-logic to the analyses of machining operations with the object of understanding and preparing an independent and comprehensive treatise on machining based on a uniform system of knowledge.The significance and importance of the approach outlined can be considered for both the scientific-cognitive area and in practice. It can be recognized that such an approach can help to solve problems often encountered in the evaluation of findings from machining operations in terms of accuracy. This aspect is prominent particularly because machining,. being, on the one hand, a process of metal removal and, on the other hand, a production process is realized in a great variety of applications and also because in the process of obtaining information on machining metals there are a variety of scientific disciplines employed in varying relationships. It appears, therefore, to be expedient to examine and classify these applications, and also the methods, their relationships and connections in order to establish a basis that can be helpful in building a uniform concept of the process; the understanding of which depends to a great extent on a specialized terminology referred to the 'fields of science. Research of this type can help to shape the training programme for educating workers in this field. The results of this research will be felt in organizational systems of industry, enterprises and workplaces, as well as in the organization and coordination of research and development. But the most important point in practical terms is that questions of automation cannot be solved completely without this research.
