Mathematical models for the estimation of leaf chlorophyll content based on RGB colours of contact imaging with smartphones: A pomegranate example

Abstract: The objective of this study was to develop a mathematical model for the non-destructive, fast estimation of the leaf chlorophyll (Chl) content of pomegranate trees. For this reason, contact images of the leaf samples were firstly captured with smartphones and the RGB colours of the images were used for the estimation of the leaf Chl contents. Here, different methods were used for the contact imaging. In the present study, two closed boxes with a small hole (equal to the dimensions of a smartphone camera) on ea… Show more

“…ere are high levels of bioactive compounds in pomegranate peel and its extract, mainly phenolic acids, flavonoids, and hydrolysable tannins. PPE has therapeutic effects such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activities [13,14]. Pomegranate peel has higher antioxidant and antimicrobial activity than other parts of the pomegranate fruit [13,15].…”

“…Remote and proximal sensing-based chlorophyll evaluations are more frequently applied in PV. Several studies emphasized that chlorophyll concentration correlates with RGB values and RGB-based vegetation indices, which was evaluated according to digital image analysis on, for example, wheat and rye [27], barley [28], apple [29], pomegranate [30], birch [31], sugar beet [32], and, moreover, on amaranth and quinoa [33]. Nevertheless, results are not coincident and in the different reports, the correlation of the color indices with the chlorophyll concentration does not point in the same direction.…”
