Abstract: A novel mechanism for ρ − ω mixing induced by neutron-proton asymmetry in nuclear matter is uncovered and the variation of the mixing angle with the extent of asymmetry is presented.

“…(52), with the vacuum spectral strength of the ρ, while the dashed curve shows the calculation with our medium-modified spectral strength of Eq. (36). We can see that the medium effects redistribute the dilepton yields from higher to lower values of M. This is a typical effect of broadening of the ρ, found in previous investigations.…”

“…In these calculations masses of hadrons, or widths, or both, are significantly changed by the presence of the medium (for a recent review see [33,34,35]). In addition, medium may induce meson mixing absent in the vacuum [36,37,38,39]. An indirect indication for the modification of vector mesons has been provided by the dilepton production measurements in relativistic heavy-ion collisions (CERES [40], HELIOS [41]).…”

“…Besides using many-body theories with interactions that are explicitly charge-dependent, e.g., the Bonn [321], Reid93 [322] and V18 potentials [323], one can also explain the difference between the scattering lengths a nn and a pp successfully using approaches based on the ρ − ω meson mixing [324][325][326][327][328][329] or the hadron mass splitting [321,330]. Within the meson-mixing picture, the two vector mesons may undergo a transition between each other through the baryonantibaryon loop (or polarization).…”

“…This idea was suggested first in Ref. [16] where it has been pointed out that the presence of asymmetric nuclear matter has a profound effect on the mixing of the ρ and ω resonances. There the mixing angle was determined from the matter induced non-diagonal self energy of the ρ 0 resonance by employing an SU(2) F symmetric hadronic model.…”
