Maxillary molar with two palatal roots: Two case reports

Abstract: An awareness and understanding of the presence of an additional root and unusual root canal morphology is essential as it determines the successful outcome of endodontic treatment. Aberrations in root canal anatomy are commonly occurring phenomena. A thorough knowledge of basic root canal anatomy and its variation is necessary for successful completion of endodontic treatment. This report points to the importance of looking for additional roots and canals because knowledge of their existence would enable clini… Show more

“…Of the various cases of maxillary first molars with two palatal roots reported, it was interesting to note that the majority of cases presented a Christie et al19 Type I pattern 101415182021. It is important to note that except Type I, identifications of other variants are very difficult on a radiograph alone but are more obvious when extracted teeth are examined.…”

“…Although the incidence of four-rooted maxillary first molars with two palatal roots is rare, they do occur 61112131415161718192021. Diamond was the first to illustrate in his textbook examples of two extracted maxillary first molars with two distinct and widely divergent palatal roots 30.…”

“…Variations in the root canal's anatomy of the root canals play an important role on endodontic therapy success (Chakradhar Raju et al, 2010), mainly in teeth with pulp necrosis (Favieri et al, 2006). It is very important to point out the changes in the root canals morphology in teeth requiring endodontic treatment (Oporto et al, 2010).…”
