Maxillary sinus floor grafting with β‐tricalcium phosphate in humans: density and microarchitecture of the newly formed bone

Abstract: Six months after insertion of the grafts, the bone of the augmented sinus floor was strong and suitable for anchorage of dental implants, irrespective of whether autogenous bone or Cerasorb particles had been applied.

“…b-Tricalciumphosphate (Cerasorb) was been used in the intervention groups in the studies by SUBA et al 26 , SZABO et al 27 , ZERBO et al 39 and ZIJDERVELD et al 40 . A meta-analysis of these revealed a significantly higher bone fraction 5-6 months after treatment when applying autogenous bone (P = 0.036).…”

“…Similarly, Cerasorb ® , a resorbable, fully synthetic, pure-phase β-TCP matrix with interconnecting porosity, showed effective replacement by bone tissue and gradual absorption of β-TCP in human sinus floor augmentation before implant surgery 7) . Although the influence of remnant β-TCP on bone tissue remains unknown, the residues seen in this study could be an acceptable consequence of β-TCP playing a favorable role as a bone regeneration scaffold.…”

“…To overcome this problem, highly pure β-TCP was developed. Recently, in oral and maxillofacial surgery, highly pure β-TCP has been utilized in bone reconstruction as a scaffold for enhanced bone regeneration [5][6][7] . In the present study, the objective was to assess the potential of highly pure, porousβ-TCP granules, OSferion ® (Olympus Biomaterial Corp., Tokyo, Japan), as a scaffold for bone regeneration.…”

“…The collagen is resorbed within 4 months in bone cavities in animals (Owens and Yukna, 2001). The use of β-TCP in the MSFE procedure has been reported (Szabo et al, 2005;Zijderveld et al, 2005;Suba et al, 2006;Simunek et al, 2008). However, the effect of a collagenous barrier membrane to cover the lateral window on bone formation after an MSFE procedure with β-TCP has not been reported.…”
