MDCT Angiography for Detection and Quantification of Small Intracranial Arteries: Comparison with Conventional Catheter Angiography

Abstract: Except for the recurrent artery of Heubner and the anterior choroidal artery, MDCT angiography depicted 90% or more of all examined small intracranial arteries detected with digital subtraction angiography. The mean sensitivity was 0.91, and the mean specificity was 0.7.

“…3D CTA may not detect small multiple aneurysms and aneurysms of the posterior communicating artery 11 . Villablanca and colleagues recently described the smallest arterial size reliably detected with multislice CTA as being 0.7 mm (4-16 slice Scanner) versus 0.4 mm for DSA 17 . Although improved spatial resolution has been reported for 3D TOF MRA 15 , CTA and DSA are superior when small vessel disease has to be addressed 10 .…”

“…Computed tomography (CT) angiography is rapidly emerging as a highly sensitive and specific modality for large and medium vessel pathologies of the head and neck. 6 In a recent study comparing CT and magnetic resonance (MR) angiography, it was demonstrated that CT angiography is the ideal cross-sectional modality to outline the imaging features of cervical dissections. 7 Almost 85% of extracranial dissections heal spontaneously.…”
