Objective Lily is an essential ornamental flowering species worldwide. Drought stress is a major constraint affecting the morphology and physiology and lily leaves and flowers. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanism underlying lily response to drought stress is important. Method Transcriptome and metabolome analysis were performed on Oriental Lily subjected to drought stress. Result Most transcription factors and metabolites yielded by the conjoint analysis displayed a downregulated expression pattern. Differential genes and metabolites mainly co-enriched in glycolic pathways related to sugars, such as galactose, and sucrose, glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, indicating that drought stress reduced the sugar metabolism level of Oriental Lily. Combined with transcriptome and metabolome data, nine pairs of differentially expressed metabolites and the genes (p < 0.05) were obtained. Interestingly, a gene named TRINITY_DN2608 (encoding a type of alpha-D-glucose) cloned and its overexpression lines in Arabidopsis thaliana was generated. Overexpression of TRINITY_DN2608 gene elevated the susceptibility to drought stress possibly by suppressing the glucose level. Conclusion The enrichment of sugar-related pathways advocates the potential role of glucose metabolism in drought stress. Our study provides theoretical information related to the glucose-mediated drought response and would be fruitful in future lily breeding programs.

The membrane proteins of the magnesium transporter (MGT) family are essential to Mg homeostasis. However, there has not been a comprehensive study of MGT in pear. The 17 MGT that were renamed to PbMGT1-17 in this study were found in the pear genome database. Phylogenetically, PbMGT proteins were categorized into three groups, namely NIPA, MRS2, and CorA. The majority of PbMGT were hydrophobic proteins situated on the chloroplast, according to the characterization study. Members of the same group shared comparable conserved motifs and gene structure, as revealed by motif and exon/intron analysis. The application of gene ontology (GO) and cis-elements has demonstrated that PbMGT genes exhibit a high degree of sensitivity to stressors and take part in chloroplast development and Mg+ ion transport. It was discovered by tissue-specific expression analysis that PbMGT genes might have a role in the development of organs. The critical significance of PbMGT was shown through comprehensive expression in five pear cultivars at various fruit developmental stages. The PbMGT5 gene was significantly expressed throughout fruit development, suggesting a role in the setting and ripening processes of pear fruits. For the first time, our research brought attention to the function of PbMGT genes as they relate to fruit development. Our research is likely to serve as an incentive for the development of pear breeding initiatives in the future.

Climate change-induced weather events, such as extreme temperatures, prolonged drought spells, or flooding, pose an enormous risk to crop productivity. Studies on the implications of multiple stresses may vary from those on a single stress. Usually, these stresses coincide, amplifying the extent of collateral damage and contributing to significant financial losses. The breadth of investigations focusing on the response of horticultural crops to a single abiotic stress is immense. However, the tolerance mechanisms of horticultural crops to multiple abiotic stresses remain poorly understood. In this review, we described the most prevalent types of abiotic stresses that occur simultaneously and discussed them in in-depth detail regarding the physiological and molecular responses of horticultural crops. In particular, we discussed the transcriptional, posttranscriptional, and metabolic responses of horticultural crops to multiple abiotic stresses. Strategies to breed multi-stress-resilient lines have been presented. Our manuscript presents an interesting amount of proposed knowledge that could be valuable in generating resilient genotypes for multiple stressors.
