Mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width in vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease

Abstract: Activated platelets play a substantial role in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and atherothrombosis. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an early marker of platelet activation, which is linked to a variety of pro-thrombotic and pro-inflammatory diseases. This study is to examine the association between platelet indices and vascular dementia (VaD) and AD. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the levels of platelet count, MPV, and platelet distribution width (PDW) in 150 VaD patients, 110 AD patients, and 150 non-d… Show more

“…6 Moreover, platelets release more than 90% of circulating amyloid precursor protein (APP), which has been regarded as a diagnostic biomarker for AD. 13,14 The idea that AD is treated through the inhibition of pathologically excessive release of Aβ by platelets was suggested as an alternative therapeutic strategy. [10][11][12] Our previous reports confirmed that activated platelets, measured by mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width, are positively correlated with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score and have the potential to be used to differentiate between distinct dementia subtypes.…”

“…Akarsu et al [35] found PDW levels were increased in neonatal sepsis. In contrast, Liang et al [36] found that PDW levels were significantly decreased in Alzheimer diseases. Topal et al [37] showed that PDW levels were decreased in atopic eczema.…”

“…PDW above 18% was described as increasing the risk of mortality [Guclu et al, 2013]. There are also studies reporting low PDW values [Liang et al, 2014;Huang et al, 2015]. PDW was significantly lower in the patient group compared to the control group on Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia cases [Liang et al, 2014].…”
