Mean platelet volume is associated with aortic intima-media thickness in patients without clinical manifestation of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease

Abstract: Objective:Mean platelet volume (MPV) plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of atherosclerotic disease. Thoracic aortic intima-media thickness (IMT) was reported as an earlier marker of preclinical atherosclerosis than carotid IMT. However, the relationship between MPV and aortic IMT was not investigated. We aimed to assess the relationship between thoracic aortic IMT and MPV in patients undergoing transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) examination for different indications. Methods:We studied 190 patients… Show more

“…Earlier findings have established that raised PDW and MPV levels are an independent risk factor for myocardial infarction including coronary heart diseases. [3941] Increased platelet size is a risk factor for cardiovascular as well as diabetes and atherosclerosis disease, which have also been reported by some researchers, while increased MPV levels have shown in several inflammatory syndromes, such as, periodontitis, osteoarthritis and systemic sclerosis. [42,43] …”

“…Previous studies have examined MPV in the development of CAD [3,[8][9][10]. MPV is an important factor for helping predict the prognosis of patients with CAD [6,[11][12][13].…”

“…Larger platelet size is associated with more platelet function and activation which plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of atherosclerotic disease and ultimately long-term cardiotoxicity. Thrombocyte activation and aggregation leads to proliferation and migration of smooth muscle cells from the media to endothelium in early stages of atherogenesis [10][11][12]. In this regard, we aimed to study whether the anthracycline-based chemotherapy triggers a higher MPV that indicates the platelet activity.…”
