Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Width (PDW), Platelet Count and Plateletcrit (PCT) as predictors of in-hospital paediatric mortality: a case-control Study

Abstract: Background: Thrombocytopenia has been shown to predict mortality. We hypothesize that platelet indices may be more useful prognostic indicators. Our study subjects were children one month to 14 years old admitted to our hospital. Aim: To determine whether platelet count, plateletcrit (PCT), mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) and their ratios can predict mortality in hospitalised children. Methods: Children who died during hospital stay were the cases. Controls were age matched chi… Show more

“…33 Similarly, the ratios of the platelet indices and platelet index have been compared in a case control study in a pediatric population as a predictor of mortality. 34 None of the other studies in dengue infection have taken into account these ratios. Further prospective studies are needed to assess the utility of these indices in dengue fever.…”

“…High mean platelet volume (MPV) values are associated with coronary flow and high risks of recurrent stroke in adults (4,5). Elevated MPV, platelet distribution width (PDW), and increased plateletcrit (PCT) are associated with mortality in diseases such as ischemic coronary artery disease, pneumonia, kidney disease, and cancer (6)(7)(8)(9). Platelet activation and consumption are seen commonly in critical ill patients and indicate a poorer prognosis (10).…”
