Meaningless spirituality?

Abstract

This chapter discusses the emergence of a Satsang network in Europe and North America, spreading Hindu-inspired non-dualist teachings known as "Neo-Advaita." The article explores how this "meaningless spirituality" can provide a source of meaning in life, despite its portrayal of life as meaningless. The Satsang network is a grassroots response to the modern Western crisis of importance, and its meetings draw spiritual seekers searching for a deeper meaning and purpose in life. The article explains the practical and intellectual roots of the satsang network, which continues an ancient Indian religious custom and draws on Advaita Vedanta. This Hindu tradition emphasizes non-dualist interpretations of the Upanishads. The article argues that the satsang network provides a quasi-therapeutic space for students to discuss personal problems and existential anxieties. Its talks and texts translate an Eastern religion into contemporary Western culture.
