Measurement Properties of the Online EuroQol-5D-Youth Instrument in Children and Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Questionnaire Study

Abstract: BackgroundThe lack of continuity between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) instruments designed for children and adults hinders change analysis with a life course approach. To resolve this gap, EuroQol (EQ) developed the EQ-5D-Youth (EQ-5D-Y), derived from the EQ-5D for adults. Few studies have assessed the metric properties of EQ-5D-Y in children with specific chronic conditions, and none have done so for children with type I diabetes mellitus (T1DM).ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate the acceptabilit… Show more

“…The EQ-5D-Y is short questionnaire that is responsive to changes and is generally acceptable, especially in acutely ill children. It has been used to evaluate HRQoL in children and adolescents with various diseases [ 13 , 14 ]. The EQ-5D-Y-5L, a five-level version of the EQ-5D-Y, has been demonstrated to be responsive and suitable for certain diseases among the young population in precedent studies [ 15 , 16 ].…”

“…The test-retest reliability of the standard Y-3L has been assessed and demonstrated in general young populations [16] and paediatric patients with chronic kidney disease [17], but not in those with haematological malignancies. To date, there have been very few studies on the test-retest reliability of the Y-5L [18,19].…”

“…Chronic Disease (unspeci ed by authors) [35]. Additionally, 3 of the studies [34,35,46] used samples of adolescents living with a various chronic illness, rather than looking at adolescents with a speci c chronic illness, thereby suggesting that the instruments used in these studies were not symptom/disease speci c. All four studies that were conducted in Africa involved ALHIV [47][48][49][50] while studies involving adolescents living with type 1 diabetes are mostly from European and American countries [34,35,[51][52][53][54]. The KIDSCREEN [n=5] and Strengths and Di culties Questionnaire [n=5] were the most frequently used measuring instruments…”

“…Health-related quality of life and Quality of life scales From Table 2, six instruments measure health-related quality of life (HRQoL), namely: Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) paediatric pro le -25 [34,40,41]; Child Health Questionnaire [51]; EQ-5D-Y [54]; Monitoring Individual Needs in Diabetes Youth Questionnaire (MY-Q) [52]; Quality of Life Pro le for Chronic Diseases (PLC) [55]; and the Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) [55]. HRQoL is a multi-dimensional concept that includes domains related to physical, mental, emotional, and social functioning.…”
