Measures of postural stability

Abstract: Abstract-Dynamic posturography has become an important tool for understanding standing balance in clinical settings. A key test in the NeuroCom International (Clackamas, Oregon) dynamic posturography system, the Sensory Organization Test (SOT), provides information about the integration of multiple components of balance. The SOT test leads to an outcome measure called the "equilibrium score" (ES), which reflects the overall coordination of the visual, proprioceptive, and vestibular systems for maintaining stan… Show more

“…There are many methods to assess postural control (Chaudhry et al, 2004;Pierchala et al, 2012), one of the most used is the study of the body center of pressure (COP) oscillations using a force platform (Baldini, 2010;Lanska, 2001) and the use of the stabilometric platform in order to evaluate posture is a standard for both clinical practice and research in many medical fields (Baldini et al, , 2013a.…”

“…During the NeuroCom Sensory Organization Test (SOT) protocol, the participant's sensory information is altered by calibrated ''sway referencing'' of the support surface or visual surroundings (or both), which tilt to directly follow the patient's anterior-posterior body sway. 15 Objective measurements of postural stability are important in an active population, especially in the US Military. The US Special Operations Command encompasses the Special Operations Forces (SOFs) of all military branches.…”

“…The key test in dynamic posturography system is SOT which provides information about integration of multiple components of balance. 6 The aim of the work was to compare between balance characteristics among different age groups using computerized dynamic posturography to provide clinicians with normal reference values.…”
