Measuring article quality in wikipedia

Abstract: Wikipedia has grown to be the world largest and busiest free encyclopedia, in which articles are collaboratively written and maintained by volunteers online. Despite its success as a means of knowledge sharing and collaboration, the public has never stopped criticizing the quality of Wikipedia articles edited by non-experts and inexperienced contributors. In this paper, we investigate the problem of assessing the quality of articles in collaborative authoring of Wikipedia. We propose three article quality meas… Show more

“…On Wikipedia, regarding classes FA and GA, experiments are very conclusive. Proposed solution clearly outperforms Basic [10], suggesting a non-negligible benefit (+2 % and +9 % for FA and GA articles resp.) of considering the strength of collaborations to identify high quality articles.…”

“…More particularly, non considering such features leads to the greatest loss in terms of model quality. Hu et al [10] propose to identify high quality articles on Wikipedia by exploiting this mutual dependency over a bipartite graph associating the articles to their contributors. Still on Wikipedia, a previous work [8] shows the interest of considering a coedit relation between authors and reviewers to identify high quality articles.…”

“…This creates a general perception of low quality from the research community, in spite of difficulties in actually measuring this ( Hu et al , 2007). However, much of this perception can most likely be explained by a lack of familiarity with the model, and we might expect comfort to increase and attitudes to change with effective training and communications, and increased engagement and understanding of the process ( Xiao & Askin, 2014).…”

“…It is therefore obvious to look to research work on Wikipedia to see if there are similar issues occurring in terms of: contributor behaviour, editing, etc. Wikipedia has grown to be the world largest and busiest free encyclopedia, in which articles are collaboratively written and maintained by volunteers online (Hu et al, 2007). They suggest for Wikipedia that given it's collaborative nature the "user interaction data" must be analysed with article quality metrics to obtain a good overall understanding of the quality of an article.…”
