Measuring Livestock CH4 Emissions with the Laser Methane Detector: A Review

Abstract: The handheld, portable laser methane detector (LMD) was developed to detect gas leaks in industry from a safe distance. Since 2009, it has also been used to measure the methane (CH4) concentration in the breath of cattle, sheep, and goats to quantify their CH4 emissions. As there is no consensus on a uniform measurement and data-analysis protocol with the LMD, this article discusses important aspects of the measurement, the data analysis, and the applications of the LMD based on the literature. These aspects, … Show more

“…The Greenfeed system (C-Lock Inc., Rapid City, USA) may be more useful for in situ measurements for stall-feeding systems (e.g., intensive and smallholder mixed crop-livestock) (53). We currently do not consider the laser methane detector method to be suitable for developing EFs, but this approach could be useful for ranking mitigation options (69). Ongoing advances that increase the accuracy of laser methane detector could reduce the costs of enteric CH 4 measurements and make this method more attractive for SSA (70).…”

“…It also does not require an external power supply. As a result, it is reasonably inexpensive to employ in a wide range of experimental and commercial situations [ 27 ]. Researchers have further developed and evaluated the measurement, refined the analysis of data obtained with the LMD, and applied the LMD in studies on genetic analyses [ 28 ], [ 29 ], nutrition and feed efficiency [ 30 , 31 ], and the physiological status of animals [ 29 ], as well as to characterize different husbandry systems [ 32 ].…”

“…The higher CH 4 concentrations during eructation can be differentiated from the lower concentrations during respiration. An additional limitation is a correct distance the device should be from the animal ( Sorg, 2022 ) to avoid contamination from the neighboring animal. The major disadvantage of the technique is that similarly to sniffers, only concentration and not flux are measured.…”
