The impetus of the current research is to use the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) algorithm to investigate fluid behaviour and gas transport in porous microchannels. Here, we demonstrate DSMC’s capability to simulate porous media up to 40% porosity. In this study, the porous geometry is generated by a random distribution of circular obstacles through the microchannel with no interpenetration between the obstacles. The influence of the morphology along with rarefaction and gas type on the apparent permeability is investigated. Moreover, the effects of porosity, solid particle’s diameter and specific surface area are considered. Our results demonstrate that although decreasing porosity intensifies tortuosity in the flow field, the tortuosity reduces at higher Knudsen numbers due to slip flow at solid boundaries. In addition, our study on two different gas species showed that the gas type affects slippage and apparent gas permeability. Finally, comparing different apparent permeability models showed that Beskok and Karniadakis model is valid only up to the early transition regime and at higher Knudsen numbers, the current data matches those models that take Knudsen diffusion into account as well.

Review of Formation and Gas Characteristics in Shale Gas Reservoirs

An accurate understanding of formation and gas properties is crucial to the efficient development of shale gas resources. As one kind of unconventional energy, shale gas shows significant differences from conventional energy ones in terms of gas accumulation processes, pore structure characteristics, gas storage forms, physical parameters, and reservoir production modes. Traditional experimental techniques could not satisfy the need to capture the microscopic characteristics of pores and throats in shale plays. In this review, the uniqueness of shale gas reservoirs is elaborated from the perspective of: (1) geological and pore structural characteristics, (2) adsorption/desorption laws, and (3) differences in properties between the adsorbed gas and free gas. As to the first aspect, the mineral composition and organic geochemical characteristics of shale samples from the Longmaxi Formation, Sichuan Basin, China were measured and analyzed based on the experimental results. Principles of different methods to test pore size distribution in shale formations are introduced, after which the results of pore size distribution of samples from the Longmaxi shale are given. Based on the geological understanding of shale formations, three different types of shale gas and respective modeling methods are reviewed. Afterwards, the conventional adsorption models, Gibbs excess adsorption behaviors, and supercritical adsorption characteristics, as well as their applicability to engineering problems, are introduced. Finally, six methods of calculating virtual saturated vapor pressure, seven methods of giving adsorbed gas density, and 12 methods of calculating gas viscosity in different pressure and temperature conditions are collected and compared, with the recommended methods given after a comparison.

An accurate description of fluid flow is critical for the prediction of the productivity of shale gas reservoirs. In this paper, we present the current advances and a systematic summary on the fluid flow in shale gas reservoirs. First, shale pore structures, consisting of organic pores and inorganic pores ranging from nanoscale to micro-scale, and reservoir fluids, including free gas, absorbed gas, and water, are systematically presented. Thereafter, multi-physics flow phenomena motivated by scale effects, such as continuum flow, slip flow, transition flow, free molecular flow, and surface diffusion for gas, as well as the effective viscosity and slip boundary condition for water, are carefully summarized. Meanwhile, these flow mechanisms are discussed with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and theoretical analysis. Subsequently, on the basis of upscaling approaches, including capillary bundle models, the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), and pore network models (PNMs), fluid flow through heterogeneous shale matrix is reviewed and the influences of scale effects and pore structures are clarified. Additionally, shale gas well performance is discussed by combining the multiple transport mechanisms and a fracturing-shut-in-flowback-production process. Our review concluded that the fluid flow behaviour in shale gas reservoirs is a complex multi-scale process accompanied by multi-physical phenomena and multi-fluid distributions. Keeping this in mind is helpful for predicting the shale gas production and recoverable gas resources. We expect this study can not only help by providing a better understanding of the fluid flow in shale reservoirs but also provide significant implications to address other multiphase flow processes.
