Measuring Operator’s Situation Awareness in Smart Operation of Cranes

Abstract: -Equipment operators play an integral role in the safe and efficiency operation of heavy equipment. They observe the environment, understand the situation, and make decisions and actions accordingly. Compared with other types of equipment, operating a crane is more sophisticated and mentally demanding, and thus crane operators are more vulnerable to human errors. Therefore, special considerations to mitigate operator errors should be taken when designing an operatorassistance system for construction cranes. Wi… Show more

“…When the operator understands the dangerous conditions in the first stage and proceeds to the next stage of risk detection, he must correctly recognize the type and severity of the risks using his experience, knowledge, and comprehensive situational awareness. Therefore, the lack of perception and recognition of risks depends on a person's experience and knowledge of his job conditions [53]. Training, as an organizational factor, along with the two factors of experience and knowledge, can help improve a person's awareness of the hazards and risks of his work environment by creating mental models for the worker because these models create mechanisms for the process of perception [54].…”

“…Maintaining good SA is essential for successful hazard perception and risk comprehension among construction workers because hazard perception and risk comprehension share the concepts of levels 1 and 2 SA, respectively (Fang and Cho 2017;Perlman, Sacks, and Barak 2014). Poor SA can expose workers to dangers (Hasanzadeh, Esmaeili, and Dodd 2016).…”
