Measuring parental support for children's physical activity in white and African American parents: The Activity Support Scale for Multiple Groups (ACTS-MG)

Abstract: Objectives-The Activity Support Scale (ACTS) was expanded for use with African American families. Its factorial invariance and internal reliability were examined for non-Hispanic white and African American parents.Methods-The ACTS was modified to improve its applicability to African American families based on information from five focus groups with 27 African American parents of elementary school-aged children. “…Parents' restriction of child screen time was assessed using a single item from the Activity Support Scale 30,31 (''I make sure that my child watches TV, plays video games, or uses the computer for no more than 2 hours per day [in total]'') and a 4-point response scale (1 = strongly disagree to 4 = strongly agree). Given the skewed nature of the data, responses were reduced to a dichotomous variable.…”

“…4 Child-perceived parental restriction of sedentary behaviors was assessed by using a modified version of the sedentary time restriction subscale of the Activity Support Scale. 26 The scale asks children to report whether a parent limits TV time, video/computer game time, and computer time for nonhomework activities and whether the parent tells the child to go outside after spending substantial time indoors. Questions adopt a 4-point response scale (strongly disagree to strongly agree).…”

“…10,14,15 Varied definitions and instruments have been used to assess PA parenting practices through child 16 or parent report. 9,17,18 Some of these instruments included restriction of screen media (TV viewing, computer, and videogame playing), particularly TV viewing, as a major part of the scale 18 or as a subfactor of the scale. 17 Screen-media use may influence children's PA through a displacement effect, 19 that is, children who participate in less-sedentary behaviors, such as TV viewing, may be more physically active.…”
