Measuring Treatment Outcome by the Beck Depression Inventory

Abstract: The construct validity of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) in measuring treatment outcome is assessed in 103 psychiatric inpatients. In this context, construct validity means that the BDI measures the same construct in repeated measurement and that the change scores can be explained by treatment effects. In confirmatory factor analyses, only the first factor proved to be stable. In accordance with other studies, the sensitivity to therapeutic change in long-term intervals of several weeks could be confirmed… Show more

“…Patients scoring from 0 to 2 on the mRS were classified as independent in activities of daily living; those scoring 3–5 were categorized as experiencing moderate to severe disability [28]. The total BDI sum scores were grouped into 5 bands that represented normal (<10 patients), mild (11–16 patients), borderline (17–20 patients), moderate (21–30 patients), severe (31–40 patients) and very severe (>40 patients) depressive symptoms [29]. …”

“…It has been shown to correlate with biological markers of depression 93 and to be sensitive to change. 94,95 It also appears to be valid in patients with significant cognitive impairment. 96,97 The scale is generally considered to be in the public domain (see, for example, Table 3 located in Supplementary Materials), but purchase of the scale from the publisher is required for use in large-scale research projects.…”

“…The question whether significant changes are due to the therapeutic process or indicate changes in the response behavior or reflect mood changes is discussed by Richter et al [11]. The authors show that changes in the response behavior independent of the therapeutic process can cause a significant reduction in the BDI scores even if the instruction asks for a time frame of at least 1 week.…”
