“…Composite indicators (CIs) are considered as popular instruments for evaluating and ranking the performance of countries/institutions in the field of human development, sustainable society index, environmental performance, sustainability, innovation, or other complex phenomena which cannot be directly measured and are not uniquely defined. CIs are applied for different objectives in various fields including policy monitoring, public relations, and ranking (Becker, Paruolo, Saisana, & Saltelli, 2017) (Mauro, Giusti, Marchetti, & Pratesi, 2021) (Lo-Iacono-Ferreira, Garcia-Bernabeu, Hilario-Caballero, & Torregrosa-López, 2022) (Zhang & Zhou, 2018).…”

“…First, for the year 2021, it seeks to analyze the degree of homogeneity in SDG achievement based on the 5Ps, distinguishing between two samples of countries according to the World Bank's classification 1 : one sample contains a total of 65 Low Income Countries (LICs) and Low‐Middle Income Countries (LMICs), while the other contains 39 Upper‐Middle Income Countries (UMICs) and High Income Countries (HICs). The classification of the SDGs into 5Ps is based on several studies in the literature (Leal Filho et al, 2018; Lo‐Iacono‐Ferreira et al, 2022; OECD, 2017; Puertas & Marti, 2023). Complementarily, the second aim is to establish a ranking of countries according to their achievement of the SDGs, to which end a synthetic indicator (SI) is produced, and then to identify which country risk factors are associated with SDG achievement.…”

“…To do so, composite indicators, rankings and benchmarking exercises, despite their limitations, have been considered useful tools to assess the phenomena and support decision-making as they allow for the illustration of multidimensional phenomena with a relatively small amount of information (Papa et al , 2017; Sáez et al , 2020). Also, they facilitate performance comparisons by considering multiple dimensions, such as economic structure, productivity, innovation, environmental and social conditions, among others (Jiang and Shen, 2010; Huggins, 2003; Hu et al , 2013; Sáez and Periáñez, 2015; Sáez et al , 2017; Ivaldi et al , 2016; Yigitcanlar et al , 2019; Chung et al , 2021; Lo-Iacono-Ferreira et al , 2022).…”
