Measuring vulnerability of road network considering the extent of serviceability of critical road links in urban areas

Abstract: Road networks are vulnerable to natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes and forest fires which can adversely affect the travel on the network that remains intact after an event. However, not all road links equally affect the travel conditions in a given network; typically some links are more critical to the network functioning than the others. It is noted that the majority of the existing indices designed to measure vulnerability offer a good measure of network-wide accessibility in sparse regional netwo… Show more

“…Besides, in the future, we will develop a model and solution method to handle the case of node failures. Moreover, we will extend the current methodology to handle other vulnerability measures (e.g., Balijepalli and Oppong, 2014;Chen et al, 2007;Ho et al, 2013;Luathep et al, 2011b) and demand uncertainty (e.g., Chen and Yang, 2004;Chen et al, 2010;Ng and Waller, 2009a,b;Chen et al 2011;Li et al, 2012Li et al, , 2014 to find the critical combination of vulnerable links.…”

“…Snelder et al (2012) develop a framework for robustness analysis that synthesises and extends many of the ideas that hitherto have been applied in vulnerability studies. In contrast to previous studies, Balijepalli and Oppong (2014) focus on road networks in urban areas. They compare the performance of several vulnerability indices usually applied to sparse regional networks and suggest a new index more relevant to urban networks by considering the importance of the road links for the urban network and illustrate its computation in the event of a flooding in the city of York in England.…”
