Measuring working memory capacity with the letter–number sequencing task: Advantages of visual administration

Abstract: Working memory capacity plays a major role in many applied contexts, and it is important to be able to accurately measure this construct. The current studies tested whether the modality of administration of the letter-number sequencing task affects performance on the task. The letter-number sequencing task is a working memory capacity measure included as part of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV test batteries. The task involves hearing a series of letters and d… Show more

“…At the cognitive level, working memory encompasses several cognitive operations depending on the theoretical model adopted (Baddeley, 2012; Barrouillet & Camos, 2014), including encoding, capacity, maintenance, updating, rehearsal and decay. At the measurement level, Letter Number Sequencing and other clinical tests of working memory are not process pure (Egeland, 2015; Mielicki et al, 2018). Standard Letter Number Sequencing scoring does not distinguish between capacity and manipulation, for example.…”

“…Second, the Letter-Number Sequencing task used to measure WM in this study might measure the verbal buffer, a domain-specific “slave system” ( 43 ), rather than measuring more complex executive functions ( 72 ). Strong neuroimaging evidence connects verbal WM with the left hemisphere ( 73 ).…”

“…In this test, participants listened to a series of numbers and letters in their L1 and were asked to remember and organize them, typing first the numbers in ascending order and then the letters in alphabetical order. We administered an oral version of the test because the oral version is more common and demanding than the visual version (Mielicki et al, 2018), and because the eye-tracking task was also oral. There were two practice trials and 20 experimental series, increasing in length from three to eight items (letters and numbers).…”
