Mechanical characterization and modeling of an innovative composite material for railway applications

Abstract: The innovation in the railway industry is focused on the production of lightweight vehicles with high performance, in order to obtain an energy power saving and to satisfy the environmental and global community requests. To pursue this aim, new materials have been increasingly used for vehicle structures. The selection of innovative materials and the definition of the relative properties represent, however, one of the most critical aspects for the design. Several factors, such as technical requirements, streng… Show more

“…5 However, the selection of innovative materials and the definition of the relative properties represent one of the most critical aspects of the design process. 6 Recently developed materials often require a costlier and longer material certification process. 7 Moreover, in nuclear industry materials used in construction of reactor pressure vessels (RPV) are validated after severe tests simulating ''in-service'' conditions.…”

“…3,4 The selection of innovative materials represent one of the most critical aspects for the design and is subjected to various constraints and fulfillment of certain goals of design. 5,6 Equivalences between different standardized specifications of materials are usually established with respect to their main chemical and mechanical properties. However, the technological requirements described by equivalent specifications sometimes exhibit significant differences between them.…”
