Mechanical, Physical, and Barrier Properties of Poly(Lactide) Films

Abstract: High molecular mass poly(lactide), (PLA), is an attractive polymer family because in addition to being thermoplastic, biodegradable, compostable, and produced from annually renewable resources, it shows mechanical and barrier behavior comparable to synthetic polymers like polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Furthermore, technology for large-scale fabrication of PLA has been fully developed. However, there is still a need to better understand the properties of PLA as this polymer is adapted t… Show more

“…Neat PLA oxygen barrier properties are in accordance with published data [54,[60][61][62][63][64][65]. Interestingly, the inclusion of at least 10 wt% of lignin yielded a decrease in oxygen permeability of around 20 %.…”

“…The reports on this had indicated an increase in the thermal stability of the PLA in the presence of Fibers. Rafael A. Auras [3] gives the properties of PLA such as glass transition temperature (Tg) of PLA ranges from 50 to 80 0 C while the melting temperature (Tm) ranges from 130 to 180 0 C. K. Murali Mohan Rao, [4] had explained the extraction process of Elephant grass fiber and properties of elephant grass fiber. The tensile strength and the modulus of chemically extracted elephant grass fiber composites have increased by approximately 1.45 times to those of elephant grass fiber composite extracted by retting process.…”

“…Poly(lactic acid), a renewable polymer, is synthesized by esterification of lactic acid from fermentation of by product agriculture waste such as corn starch or rich flour-substance such as maize, sugar and wheat [16]. Poly(lactic acid) have good heat resistance properties and strength as well as elastic polymer [17].…”
