Mechanical, Physical and Thermal Properties of Sugar Palm Nanocellulose Reinforced Thermoplastic Starch (TPS)/Poly (Lactic Acid) (PLA) Blend Bionanocomposites

Abstract: In this paper, sugar palm nanocellulose fibre-reinforced thermoplastic starch (TPS)/poly (lactic acid) (PLA) blend bionanocomposites were prepared using melt blending and compression moulding with different TPS concentrations (20%, 30%, 40%, 60%, and 80%) and constant sugar palm nanocellulose fibres (0.5%). The physical, mechanical, thermal, and water barrier properties were investigated. The SEM images indicated different TPS loading effects with the morphology of the blend bionanocomposites due to their immi… Show more

“…As seen in Figure 7 , Figure 8 and Figure 9 , the FTIR spectra curves were similar because the elemental composition of the plasticized films was based on the starch structure [ 21 , 62 , 63 ]. For the region between 2800 and 3000 cm −1 , the oscillations of water fragments led to the emergence of the wide infrared band at the peak of 3259.16 cm −1 [ 36 , 41 , 48 , 51 ].…”

“…Consequently, their availability to form hydrogen bonds with water ensures that the detachment of the PLA molecules rarely takes place and occurs very slowly. However, the addition of GO, which contains a large number of oxygen functional groups, leads to increased polar groups [ 46 , 47 , 48 ]. These will interact with PLA molecules, and thus the structure will be altered, with more oxygen-rich sites becoming available for water absorption.…”

“…The thermogram in Figure 3 a shows that at the first quartile degradation, there was a slight weight loss for all SPF/KF/PP hybrid composites ratios. Owing to that, the reduction in percentage weight was due to the release of moisture content in the SPF/KF/PP hybrid composites [ 40 ]. In addition, because of the differences in the chemical topology of the fiber components—mostly lignin, hemicellulose, and cellulose—kenaf and sugar palm fibers presumed to decomposes at significant temperatures.…”
