Mechanically and optically reliable folding structure with a hyperelastic material for seamless foldable displays

Abstract: We report a mechanically and optically robust folding structure to realize a foldable active matrix organic-light-emitting-diode (AMOLED) display without a visible crease at the junction. A nonlinear stress analysis, based on a finite element method, provided an optimized design. The folding-unfolding test on the structure exhibited negligible deterioration of the relative brightness at the junction of the individual panels up to 105 cycles at a folding radius of 1 mm, indicating highly reliable mechanical and… Show more

“…Moreover, they could be fabricated in large area [7]. Both points mean that organic devices are inherently good candidates for large-area flexible displays [8], [9], which can likely make a mobile phone function like a computer in the future. Besides, without lithography, it is cheaper to manufacture organic electronic products.…”

“…, where PTX is the transmit power, n is the attenuation factor (2 in free space) and G is the total antenna gain based on antenna gains of the transmitting antenna, G TX and the receiving antenna G RX respectively G = G TX + G RX (2) Practically, due to reflections, mutual orientation of antennas and noise the relationship between RSS and the distance of radiators is more complicated. However if RX and TX radiators are in the same physical device effects like noise, and reflections can be minimised if not avoided totally in certain forms of device like in a case where two BT antennas are facing each other.…”

“…Emergence of new BT releases has also led to implementations of single (BT 4.0 or BT 2) and dual mode (BT 4.0 and BT 2) functions which are currently enabling variety of smart accessories connected to mobile devices, cars, TVs and even in robotics. Use of BT RSS has been demonstrated in indoor positioning, face-to-face proximity estimation of separate devices and even instead of Near Field Communication (NFC) for activating payments [1], [2], [3]. There is very few data of short distance (< 0.5 m) BT RSS behaviour.…”

“…Lee's group [191] reported a mechanically and optically robust folding structure composed of two individual OLED panels and a hyper elastic silicone rubber to realize a foldable and seamless active matrix OLED (AMOLED) display without a visible crease at the junction. The folding-unfolding test a) Thickness, if available, is indicated in the brackets; b) emitter: host; c) not available; d) the device is also stretchable; e) PH1000:5 v.% DMSO: 0.5 v.% Zonyl on the structure exhibited negligible deterioration of the relative brightness at the junction of the individual panels up to 105 cycles at a folding radius of 1 mm.…”
