Mechanism for Measuring System Complexity Applying Sensitivity Analysis

Abstract: This work proposes a complexity metric which maps internal connections of the system and its relationship with the environment through the application of sensitivity analysis. The proposed methodology presents (i) system complexity metric, (ii) system sensitivity metric, and (iii) two models as case studies. Based on the system dynamics, the complexity metric maps the internal connections through the states of the system and the metric of sensitivity evaluates the contribution of each parameter to the output v… Show more

“…For the sensitivity analysis of systems with this characteristic, one of the recommended methods is the analytical method proposed by Gomes et al [60]. However, the proposed methodology in Figure 7 is not limited to the use of this method; thus, other sensitivity analysis methods such as the area method, partial derivatives, factorial planning, conditional variance, and the total effects method [70][71][72][73] can be used.…”

“…The more sensitive the parameter, the greater its impact on the system output (the greater the difference between obtained output values concerning the output value corresponding to − → β scenario). Based on this statement, Gomes 56 proposes a method called the area method to obtain the sensitivity indices of input parameters. The spider diagram analysis interval is defined by the analyst, considering possible parameter restrictions.…”

“…Based on the system model, we carry out the pre-analysis, when we define: (i) base scenario or base case, (ii) parameters variation range, and (iii) analysis interval in the spider diagram. Using the area method, we can calculate the system parameters sensitivity indices, according to expression (2) 56 . The output variable can be defined as the system performance.…”

“…A quantitative assessment of the complexity of the struc ture of technical systems is one of the most difficult problems of systems engineering, which is the subject of a number of scien tific works of domestic and foreign scientists. In [7], it is noted that in recent years a number of methods have been proposed for analyzing the complexity of production, developed on the basis of different theories and approaches. The definition of the concept of complexity is given and a number of ideas about the types of complexity are given.…”

“…In [8], a method based on the use of information entropy is used to measure the complexity of a production system configura tion. The article [7] proposes metrics of sensitivity and com plexity based on onetime values and system relationships. The relationship between performance and complexity provides the ability to create an optimized system configuration with tar geted properties.…”
