Mechanisms Involved in the Modulation of Astroglial Resistance to Oxidative Stress Induced by Activated Microglia: Antioxidative Systems, Peroxide Elimination, Radical Generation, Lipid Peroxidation

Abstract: Microglia and astrocytes are the cellular key players in many neurological disorders associated with oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. Previously, we have shown that microglia activated by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) induce the expression of antioxidative enzymes in astrocytes and render them more resistant to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In this study, we examined the mechanisms involved with respect to the cellular action of different peroxides, the ability to detoxify peroxides, and the status of further a… Show more

“…MPP+ primarily kills dopamine-producing neurons in the part of the brain that is called the pars compacta of the substantia nigra and interferes with a component of mitochondrial metabolism, which induces cell death and causes the buildup of free radicals and toxic molecules [14]. …”

“…Microglia and astrocytes are the cellular key players in many neurological disorders associated with oxidative stress and neuro-inflammation (Mosley et al 2006;Rohl et al 2010). Microglia and astrocytes activated by oxidative damage induce the expression of immune molecules, secretion of cytotoxic factors, secretion of recruitment molecules, and secretion of pro-inflammatory signaling molecules.…”

“…The complexity of the interaction between astrocytes and microglia makes it very difficult to separate their activities (Koczyk and Oderfeld-Nowak 2000). Activated microglia and astrocytes are closely associated with formation of amyloid plaques in AD (Rathke-Hartlieb et al 1999;Rohl et al 2010;Schubert and Rudolphi 1998).…”
