Meconium-stained amniotic fluid during labor may be a protective factor for the offspring’s childhood wheezing up to 3 years of age: the Japan Environment and Children’s Study

Abstract: We aimed to evaluate the association between meconium-stained amniotic fluid during labor and offspring's childhood wheezing. This study analyzed the data of participants enrolled in the Japan Environment and Children's Study, a nationwide prospective birth cohort study, between 2011 and 2014. Data of women with singleton live births between 22 and 40 weeks' gestation were analyzed. Participants were categorized into two groups according to the presence or absence of meconium-stained amniotic fluid. The primar… Show more

“…Meconium-stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) is a common condition during labor, observed in 5-20% of labor courses with post-term deliveries, mature fetal conditions, and vagal reflex because of umbilical cord compression or fetal hypoxia. 1 Recent studies suggest that it could be associated with a decreased incidence of childhood allergic disorders in offspring. 1,2 We reported a decreased incidence of childhood wheezing in the offspring of mothers with MSAF compared with that in mothers without MSAF using data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS).…”

“…We hypothesized that MSAF is associated with a decreased incidence of several types of childhood allergic disorders in offspring, as well as childhood wheezing and dermatitis, 1,2 potentially by touching or swallowing MSAF and altering the immune system. 1 The JECS is a nationwide, government-funded, prospective birth cohort study designed to investigate the effects of environmental factors on children's health and enrolled participants between 2011 and 2014. 3,4 The JECS protocol was reviewed and approved Women who had abortions, stillbirths, or missing data on exposure and outcome variables were excluded from the study.…”
