Media-Friendly and TCP-Friendly Rate Control Protocols for Multimedia Streaming

Abstract: This paper describes a design framework for TCPfriendly and media-friendly rate control algorithms for multimedia streaming applications. The idea of this framework is to start from TFRC's (TCP-Friendly Rate Control) transmission rate and then alter this transmission rate so that it tracks the media characteristics of the stream (e.g., bitrate) or other application characteristics like the client buffer fill level. In this way, the media-friendly property of the algorithm is achieved. We give three rules that … Show more

“…In order to provide better QoS support for multimedia streaming, Zhu et al in [101] extended the TFRC mechanism and proposed TFRCC (TCP Friendly Rate Control with Compensation) which also provides good network fairness. All these solutions [43], [39], [101] and others [42], [44], [45], [46], [54], [61], [102], they all present good results in wired networks but they are not suitable when it comes to wireless networks.…”

“…Basic NS-2 simulations show that NSTC reduces the packet loss rate significantly and improves the TCP friendliness. Sterca et al [46] also modified the TFRC behavior and proposed an Utilitydriven TFRC mechanism referred to as UTFRC. UTFRC tracks the evolution of the stream's bitrate to provide smooth video transmission.…”

“…However, in the recent days the applications are running variable encoding along with video streaming and hence they require the variable sending rate. UTFRC (Utility-driven TCP-Friendly Rate Control) [2][3] is an extended version of TFRC which considers the media requirement along with congestion control and hence it is suitable for streaming the video in best-effort networks than TFRC.…”
