Medication Adherence in Patients With Uncontrolled Hypertension & Hypertensive Crisis Presenting to a Hospital Setting in Karachi, Pakistan

Abstract: Background: Hypertension is an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Non-adherence to antihypertensive medications contributes to poorly controlled hypertension while also increasing the risk of hypertensive crisis. The aim of our study was thus to estimate the frequency of adherence to antihypertensive medications in our population and also see if an association exists between adherence and the development of a hypertensive crisis. Methods: This cross-sectional study was undertaken on patients ad… Show more

“…The combined effect of hemodynamic factors has the most negative impact on arterial branches, which in most cases causes the formation of aneurysms at the bifurcations of cerebral vessels (Gao et al, 2022). The causes of aneurysms are high BP, atherosclerosis, acquired traumas, heredity and abnormal blood flow at the junction where the arteries meet (Wedro, 2022;Veeturi et al, 2021).…”

“…For instance, a study reported that 37.7% of patients who visited a clinic setting in Islamabad were non-adherent to their antihypertensive medications (Mahmood et al, 2020). Similarly, in another study, 36% of inpatients who attended a healthcare setting in Karachi were observed to be non-adherent (Yousuf et al, 2023). In another study, it was observed that a large proportion of patients with rheumatoid arthritis were adherent to their therapy (Naqvi et al, 2020a).…”

“…Adherence to long-term medications for chronic illness is a global issue. Adherence to medication can be explained as the extent to which a patients’ dietary and medicine taking behavior, and lifestyle is consistent to the recommended instructions from a healthcare provider ( Yousuf et al, 2023 ; World Health Organization WHO, 2003 ). Non-adherence to medication not only has clinical implications but is one of the core reasons for additional health expenditure owing to complications and hospital admissions.…”
