Medicinal herbs and multiple sclerosis: Overview on the hard balance between new therapeutic strategy and occupational health risk

Abstract: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by demyelination and axonal loss of the central nervous system (CNS). Despite its spread throughout the world, the mechanisms that determine its onset are still to be defined. Immunological, genetic, viral, and environmental factors and exposure to chemicals may trigger MS. Many studies have highlighted the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects of medicinal herbs, which make them a natural and complementary treatment for neurodegenerative dise… Show more

“…The polyphenols obtained from Curcuma longa are curcumin, dimethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin which function as antioxidants and protect the brain against a variety of oxidative stress (Pavlovic et al, 2023). They also have neuroprotective and anti-aging properties due to their ability to hunt down superoxide anions (Costantini et al, 2022). The rhizome of C. longa is well-known as turmeric which is used in cooking food.…”

“…Exposure to OPs leads to an increase in the release of proinflammatory mediators and a decrease in the release of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, OPs inhibit oxidative phosphorylation and produce a high concentration of ROS, which subsequently leads to mitochondrial dysfunction [91,92].…”
