Medicinal Plant Centipeda Minima: A Resource of Bioactive Compounds

Abstract: Background: Centipeda minima (the family Asteraceae) is an annual herbaceous plant native to the tropical regions, especially in eastern tropical Asia. C. minima is well-known in the list of medicinal plants with capacities in treatment of whooping cough, nasal allergy, malaria, and asthma. More than sixty reports on phytochemical and pharmacological aspects of this plant are now available, but a supportive review is insufficient. Objective: The current review aims to make a compilation of almost of isolate… Show more

“…More than 100 secondary metabolites were found in the Centipeda minima plant, including terpenoids, flavonoids, mono-phenols, fatty acids, amides, and other types [ 29 ]. Sesquiterpene lactones predominate in either the Centipeda minima species or many plants of the genus Centipeda among them [ 30 ].…”

“…Phytochemical and pharmacological studies of medicinal plants have made substantial progress in recent years, with an emphasis on novel molecules with therapeutic qualities. 1117 The focus of this section is on publications over the last 40 years that deal with phytochemical investigations of Tupistra species. Up to now, approximately 200 compounds with diverse chemical structures have been isolated from the Tupistra genus, but steroid derivatives have predominated.…”

“…Spirostanol sapogenins 5, 7, and 29 resisted K562 cancer cell growth, with IC 50 values ranging from 37.31 to 54.48 μmol/L, while analog 28 showed strong cytotoxic activity against A2780a cancer cells (IC 50 = 75.15 μmol/L). 25 Δ 25 (27) -Pentrogenin (10) inhibited NUGC and HONE-1 cancer cells at a concentration of 50 μM, while ranmogenin A (11) only showed toxicity to NUGC cells, with 96% inhibition. 26 The cardenolide, tupichinolide (156), exhibited potent cytotoxicity against 5 human cancer cell lines, HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7, and SW480, with IC 50 values between 0.06 and 0.12 μM, better than those of the positive control, cisplatin (2.03-19.70 μM).…”
