In this study, native ureolytic bacteria were isolated from copper tailings soils to perform microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) tests and evaluate their potential for biocement formation and their contribution to reduce the dispersion of particulate matter into the environment from tailings containing potentially toxic elements. It was possible to isolate a total of 46 bacteria; among them only three showed ureolytic activity: Priestia megaterium T130-1, Paenibacillus sp. T130-13 and Staphylococcus sp. T130-14. Biocement cores were made by mixing tailings with the isolated bacteria in presence of urea, resulting similar to those obtained with Sporosarcina pasteurii and Bacillus subtilis used as positive control. Indeed, XRD analysis conducted on biocement showed the presence of microcline (B. subtilis 17%; P. megaterium 11. 9%), clinochlore (S. pasteurii, 6.9%) and magnesiumhornblende (Paenibacillus sp. 17.8%; P. megaterium 14.6%); all these compounds were not initially present in the tailings soils. Moreover the presence of calcite (control 0.828%; Paenibacillus sp. 5.4%) and hematite (control 0.989%; B. subtilis 6.4%) was also significant unlike the untreated control. The development of biofilms containing abundant amount of Ca, C, and O on microscopic soil particles was evidenced by means of FE-SEM-EDX and XRD. Wind tunnel tests were carried out to investigate the resistance of biocement samples, accounted for a mass loss five holds lower than the control, i.e., the rate of wind erosion in the control corresponded to 82 g/m2h while for the biocement treated with Paenibacillus sp. it corresponded to only 16.371 g/m2h. Finally, in compression tests, the biocement samples prepared with P. megaterium (28.578 psi) and Paenibacillus sp. (28.404 psi) showed values similar to those obtained with S. pasteurii (27.102 psi), but significantly higher if compared to the control (15.427 psi), thus improving the compression resistance capacity of the samples by 85.2% and 84.1% with respect to the control. According to the results obtained, the biocement samples generated with the native strains showed improvements in the mechanical properties of the soil supporting them as potential candidates in applications for the stabilization of mining liabilities in open environments using bioaugmentation strategies with native strains isolated from the same mine tailing.

Integrated Crop Livestock Systems (ICLSs) use productive diversification as a strategy to improve productivity and land use efficiency. Pasture Crop Rotations are a part of ICLSs and imply a pasture phase included in the sequence of crops. The main reasons to include pastures in crop systems are low productivity of natural grasslands and increased crop yield after a pasture phase. Our objective was to analyze the productivity indicators and management of four ICLSs that combine crop and livestock production, with data collected over a 3 y period (2019–2022). The experimental site was The Palo a Pique (Treinta y Tres, Uruguay) long-term experiment installed in 1995, located in the subtropical climate zone and on Oxyaquic Argiudolls soils (3% average slope). Systems evaluated were CC (continuous cropping), SR (two years idem CC, two years of pastures), LR (two years idem CC, four years of pastures) and FR (continuous pasture with Tall Fescue). Liveweight (LW) production, grain production and dry matter (DM) production were evaluated. Liveweight production was higher in CC and SR (426 and 418 kg LW/ha) than in LR (369 kg LW/ha) and FR (310 kg LW/ha). DM production was higher in FR and SR (6867 and 5763 kg DM/ha/year) than in LR (5399 kg DM/ha/year) and CC (5206 kg DM/ha/year). Grain production was 10%, 16% and 9% lower in soybean, wheat and sorghum in CC.

Lineamientos metodológicos para la recuperación de restos óseos humanos en contextos forenses

En el ámbito de las Ciencias Forenses, la recuperación e identificación de restos óseos humanos desempeñan un papel esencial en casos vinculados a crímenes, violaciones de derechos humanos y desastres masivos. A pesar de la relevancia de la Arqueología y la Antropología Forense en estos contextos, la falta de un protocolo estandarizado ha generado intervenciones apresuradas y resultados insatisfactorios. La presente tesis se propone abordar esta necesidad, mediante la adaptación de protocolos existentes y la realización de exhumaciones controladas en el Cementerio Municipal de La Plata, utilizando enfoques arqueológicos. Esto permitirá fortalecer la investigación en el laboratorio y enriquecer el conocimiento sobre procesos tafonómicos y formadores de sitio. La investigación se sustenta en la revisión de 35 documentos relacionados con protocolos forenses, excluyendo 15 de ellos centrados en torturas y desastres masivos que no abordan la contribución específica de un arqueólogo forense. El análisis de los documentos restantes destaca aspectos comunes, potencialidades y carencias, sirviendo como base para la formulación del protocolo regional. En el terreno, se realizaron 14 exhumaciones entre 2021 y 2022, siguiendo un proceso de selección basado en el listado proporcionado por el Cementerio Municipal de La Plata. La muestra incluyó individuos de diferentes rangos etarios y sexos, priorizando la diversidad. Estrategias arqueológicas, como la definición de unidades de excavación y el uso de herramientas especializadas, facilitaron la recuperación de los restos con precaución para evitar pérdida de información. En el laboratorio, los restos fueron acondicionados y rotulados para su identificación. Se realizó un análisis tafonómico detallado, incluyendo inventarios, cuantificación, determinación del estado de preservación y registro de procesos tafonómicos. Este enfoque integral busca contribuir al avance de las Ciencias Forenses y promover investigaciones más rigurosas y responsables. Adicionalmente, exploramos procesos tafonómicos, analizando el material exhumado y de la Colección Lambre. Destacamos la presencia de marcas de raíces, presencia de raíces, adipocira y su variabilidad según el sexo, trayectoria de entierro, y el impacto del entorno y la vegetación. También evaluamos marcas de coloración, presencia de animales, presencia de envoltorio, se realizaron estudios de pH, meteorización, alteraciones químicas e índices de preservación. Estos hallazgos revelan la complejidad de los procesos postmortem y su influencia en la preservación de restos humanos. Concluimos con el énfasis en la necesidad de un protocolo consensuado para las exhumaciones, proponiendo el CMLP-LICIF como una valiosa contribución. Este protocolo establece estándares para futuras investigaciones, promoviendo la ciencia forense y arqueología con un enfoque ético y riguroso. Su implementación adecuada no solo contribuirá al avance de la investigación, sino que también honrará la memoria de aquellos cuyos restos son objeto de estudio. En resumen, esta tesis busca llenar el vacío existente mediante la creación de un protocolo regional adaptado a condiciones locales, incorporando enfoques arqueológicos para mejorar la eficacia y precisión de las investigaciones forenses en la región de la Provincia de Buenos Aires y la pampa húmeda argentina.
