Mediterranean Diet on Sleep: A Health Alliance

Abstract: The Mediterranean diet is a plant-based, antioxidant-rich, unsaturated fat dietary pattern that has been consistently associated with lower rates of noncommunicable diseases and total mortality, so that it is considered one of the healthiest dietary patterns. Clinical trials and mechanistic studies have demonstrated that the Mediterranean diet and its peculiar foods and nutrients exert beneficial effects against inflammation, oxidative stress, dysmetabolism, vascular dysfunction, adiposity, senescence, cogniti… Show more

“…Strong associations were found between dietary habits, sedentary behaviors, and physical activity, especially among younger people [ 182 , 183 ]. Diet and sleep also have a bidirectional relationship [ 184 ]. Since sedentary behavior and sleep disturbances are extremely common among patients with chronic pain, future nutrition-based studies may consider the evaluation and combined effects of lifestyle interventions (physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep, and dietary therapy).…”

“…Contrarily, a healthy diet (i.e., Mediterranean one) was associated with a correct sleep behavior (quality and quantity), through mechanisms going beyond the recognized benefit of weight reduction [ 154 ]. Campanini and colleagues affirmed that the adherence to the Mediterranean diet is protective in terms of both preventing and improving sleep disorders [ 136 , 137 ].…”

“…The MedD, a plant-based dietary pattern rich in antioxidants and unsaturated fats. it can change the GM and metabolite composition, modulates systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, metabolic disturbances, neurodegeneration, and cognitive decline (Zhang et al, 2020;Scoditti et al, 2022). It is affected by geographical location and climate (Mattavelli et al, 2022).…”
